The piping and drumming program in North Lanarkshire schools has now grown to approximately 400 students. Since the Covid transitional period, the dedicated application of the pipe band instructors has this year meant that North Lanarkshire Council will have two competing Pipe Bands.
In 2016 NLSPB was crowned novice World Pipe Band Champions and in 2018 NLSPB was awarded the RSPBA Champion of Champions title Since then, the impressive list of major competition wins has continued with Scottish, British and European Pipe Band Championship victories gained. Following these fantastic achievements, in 2019 NLSPB were invited to take part in the famous New York Tartan Week which was led by world famous Scottish icon Billy Connolly.

North Lanarkshire Big Band
The Big Band provides our young people with an avenue into the tradition of jazz music which explores the rich vein of contemporary music that was born in the early part of the 20th century in the USA. It is open to pupils who sing, play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, bass, guitar, drums & percussion. Throughout the session the pupils are exposed to varied and challenging repertoire and experience the thrill of playing jazz and swing music in a “Big Band” environment. The Big Band has represented the Authority on a National platform on many occasions and provides great experiences and a solid grounding for our young people who are keen to pursue this genre of music. The Big Band is directed by Chris Cruickshank who is an inspirational instrumental instructor in North Lanarkshire.
North Lanarkshire Schools Wind Ensemble and Wind Band
Both these music groups offer a fantastic opportunity for North Lanarkshire’s talented young wind & percussion pupils to experience the benefits that performing in a large ensemble offers. The pupils come together once a week on a Tuesday evening, where musical & social relationships are developed as well as improving their technical and musicianship skills.
These groups are led by Robert Fairley, Emma Kennedy and Grant Golding whilst supported by a committed team of instrumental music instructors.
