Onwards and Sideways
Rhys Ifans and Laura Linney star as two people brought together by humour, dance and Parkinson’s in a life-affirming British dramedy about finding reasons to keep moving.
Tony and Emma are diagnosed with Parkinson’s on the same day and continue to drift in and out of each other’s lives over the next five years. What begins as an unlikely friendship slowly becomes something deeper, as they discover that living with Parkinson’s doesn’t mean giving up on fun, romance or trying something new.
Directed by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) and written by Paul Mayhew-Archer, whose own experience of Parkinson’s gives the film a rare personal insight, Onwards and Sideways has genuine warmth behind its humour. Rhys Ifans and Laura Linney make an appealing pair in a film that looks at Parkinson’s without letting the illness dominate the story. Sometimes you just have to keep moving - even if it’s sideways.
