'Soft Structures' - an exhibition of new work by Callum Youde
Glasgow based artist Callum Youde's first solo show since 2022. Callum's work is shaped by the everyday narratives that emerge through lived experience, drawing on immediate surroundings, personal objects, and the music that accompanies daily life. His paintings begin with structured frameworks such as grids and divided spaces, which are then disrupted by instinctive, gestural marks, creating a tension between control and spontaneity. Within these compositions, a deliberately simple and sometimes awkward visual language develops, where familiar, almost childlike imagery and handwritten text introduce moments of intimacy and emotional openness. Through layered materials, shifting colour relationships, and unresolved surfaces, the work embraces contradiction, allowing meaning to remain fluid and continuously evolving.
