Windward Away: a Celebration of Archie Fisher
From The Witch of the Westmorland to The Final Trawl and Dark Eyed Molly, Archie Fisher’s songs are among the best loved in Scottish folk music. Join us for an evening of songs and stories in celebration of one of the finest songwriters and guitarists the tradition has known.
Born in Glasgow in 1939 into one of Scotland’s best-known singing families, Archie sang alongside his sisters Ray and Cilla in the Fisher Family before becoming a leading light of the folk revival. His songs have travelled far beyond Scotland, recorded by artists across Ireland and North America and sung in folk clubs and sessions around the world.
Much of his writing grew from his years in the Scottish Borders, where he drew on the region’s traditions and his own sharp, contemporary eye, and from his lifelong love of horses. For almost thirty years he was also the warm, familiar voice of BBC Radio Scotland’s Travelling Folk, championing generations of musicians, and in 2006 he was awarded an MBE for his services to folk music.
This concert brings together Archie’s family, friends and musicians from across Scotland and beyond to share his songs and stories, in celebration of a man whose music continues to shape the tradition.
