The Barras
If you're visiting Glasgow and love food, fashion or collectibles the Barras Market is a must visit attraction in the east end. Only a 20-minute walk from both Queen Street and Central stations, it's known for vintage clothing, vinyl records and unique souvenirs. It's also an excellent street food destination, offering small vendors a place to sell their culinary delights every Saturday and Sunday from 10am - 4pm.

Light bites

If you’re just looking for a quick bite, the Barras is the perfect place to grab some street food. Cuisines from every continent can be found in the market. For a true foodie experience in Glasgow we recommend hitting a couple of spots to sample everything the market has to offer.

Josie Pops specializes in Filipino cuisine. You can find classics such as lumpia and pork adobo. Just around the corner you’ll also find Fishball Revolution, who are known for their extremely cheap Hong Kong style fishballs.

If you’re more interested in Latin American cuisine head to Colombian Bites to sample arepas, empanadas and tostadas. Alternatively you can head to another cult favourite - Alma Mexicana - for tacos, loaded nachos and burritos. They’re particularly well known for their birria tacos.

Have a hankering for seafood? Whelks and Mussels does exactly what it says on the tin - with inexpensive shellfish served in a paper cup with a toothpick. Pierogi Project also offers inexpensive fare, specialising in the Polish dumpling.

Finally, Fellalli Cafe is an excellent spot for vegetarian and vegan foodies in Glasgow. They offer Iraqi style falafel served on a bed of salad and piled high with sauces.

Bigger meals

Need something more substantial? No worries - there are plenty of options at the Barras market for a full lunch or dinner. These options will fill you up on their own, but we recommend sharing with friends so you can sample a wide range of vendors.

Pizza lovers will be spoiled for choice. Pizza Cult offers typical Neapolitan style pizzas and portafolgio - pizzas that are folded over and eaten like a sandwich. Their sister vendor, Anxious Pete's, sells New York style pizzas that are perfect if you've worked up an appetite.

Another excellent option to satisfy big appetites is Monster Munchies. Popular with locals, they offer bao buns, munchie boxes and burgers. They're also known for their £5 fish and chips - one of the cheapest in the city. If fried chicken is more your thing, try one of the Asian-inspired sandos from Cafe XO.

Malay Laksa Noodles is another great option for Asian cuisine. As the name suggests they specialise in Malaysian noodle dishes and street food sides. Down to earth food joint Ho Lee Fook has become an east end institution and is located just outside the market. Their menu changes regularly so keep an eye on their Instagram for updates.

And of course no trip to Scotland is complete without sampling our national dish - haggis. Haggis Gu Leor is one of the best places in Glasgow to try the iconic pudding. Haggis, neeps and tatties is the most traditional way to consume, but if you're looking for something more modern they also offer haggis bon bons, burgers and Scottish style 'nachos' made out of tattie (potato) scones.

Something to sip on

There are a few great beverage options to carry with you as you explore the unique clothing, retro and souvenir stalls at the Barras. Thomson's Coffee Shop is located just outside the market. Operating since 1841, Thomson's roast their beans in Glasgow - making an excellent gift for the coffee lover in your life.

Tasse Coffee are located within the market and also offer high-quality speciality coffee and some of the best matcha in Glasgow. Keep an eye out for their weekend specials - in the past they've offered unique flavours like old school cake and Vietnamese salt latte.

Need something caffeine-free? Fresh Pressed Terps offer a wide range of cold-pressed, pesticide-free fruit juices. Their Moroccan orange drink is unbeatable, and they also sell overnight oats, ginger shots and a selection of exotic fruits.

Sweet treats

After sampling all the different cuisines on offer at the Barras you might find yourself craving something sweet to finish your feast. There are a few excellent options that you can either eat in the market or take home for later.

Step back in time with Danny's Donuts who still cook their doughnuts in a retro fryer. They've been operating at the Barras market for over 50 years with locals and visitors alike heading back every weekend. Doughnuts come coated in sugar and you can also add chocolate sauce.

There are also plenty of great baked goods vendors. CassaJoJo Bakes offers a great selection of typical Scottish bakery treats. Their old school cake is a nostalgic treat for Glasgow locals. Cakes by Rebecca also offers local traybakes - we recommend their pineapple tarts - whilst Dozo sell Japanese baked goods including a matcha cheesecake.

You can also try a Scottish comfort food staple at Crumbleologist. The first crumble bar in Scotland, you can choose your own filling to enjoy with crumble pieces and custard. They also have a sister business, Spoon Me, that specialises in a more American comfort food - banana pudding. Their tiramisu banana pudding is the perfect treat to take home.

BiggarBuys is another Barras stalwart that's a must visit for foodies. The family owned business from Whitburn sell a wide range of candies and confectionaries. You can choose your own sweets to include in a pouch - great to take home and enjoy or give as a gift.
