Landing Ground. New Abstract Works by Ursula Cleary
New Abstract Works
Ursula Cleary and Edelweiss Gallery present ‘Landing Ground’
Ursula Cleary is an artist whose work combines painting, collage, and found materials. Based in Glasgow, she explores themes of forgotten histories, drawing inspiration from the city's post-industrial landscape. Her work, which frequently ties into a distinct landscape narrative is made with heavily textured, layered surfaces, inviting viewers to reconsider the beauty in overlooked details.
Ursula trained at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art at Dundee University. Whilst working in her early career as a visual, and scenic artist in theatre, she has spent many years working as a respected Art Director and Designer in Film and Television before returning to her primary and visceral inspirations.
Her technique involves the complex folding and bending of shapes to mimic natural and man-made topographies. Having spent years crafting visual worlds for the screen, Cleary now focuses on the "tactile history" of materials. Her use of mixed media builds up physical ridges and valleys on the canvas, inviting viewers to engage with the canvas as a piece of archaeology rather than just a flat surface.
