Are you visiting Glasgow over the festive period? Here you will find some practical tips on getting around the city, accessibility and where to stay.

Getting here and around

The city centre is easy to walk around, however if you plan to travel further afield you can get around the city by train, bus or subway.

Subway

The subway takes you around the city centre, west end and Govan. You'll find information about service disruptions and Christmas timetables at SPT.

Rail

Glasgow is well connected to the rest of the UK by two major train stations: Glasgow Central and Glasgow Queen Street. There are also overnight connections to London with the Caledonian Sleeper. You can also travel further afield in all directions within the city by rail.

Most train companies have an altered timetable over the festive period. ScotRail will not be running services on Christmas Day or New Year's Day, as well as earlier services on Christmas Eve and Hogmanay.

For up to date information about ScotRail services keep an eye on their website. You can also find information about Transpennine Express and Avanti West Coast on the National Rail website.

Bus

There are a number of bus companies operating within Glasgow and you can find information about their services with Traveline. Services are now capped at £2 per journey, making this an economical way to get around. If you want to make a day of it, the City Sightseeing bus has stops near most of the main Christmas hubs.

If you're travelling into Glasgow by bus you can usually find more information from Traveline or directly with the operator

Cycling

Glasgow is also home to an extensive cycling network and you can hire a bike with Voi. Prepare in advance at our Cycling in Glasgow page.

If you plan to bring your bike to Glasgow by rail it is best to book your ticket in advance with ScotRail and check if you need to book a space. Some bus and coach operators restrict bikes on board so check with them directly before you set off.

Car

Glasgow is connected to the rest of Scotland by the trunk road network. This includes all motorways, as well as major A roads like the A78 and A737. You can find advice about winter driving, as well as traffic and travel websites, at Traffic Scotland.

You can learn more about car parking in the city at Glasgow City Council. Parking at Bridge Street, Shields Road and Kelvinbridge gives you direct access to the subway, and can be particularly useful if you are not able to enter the Low Emission Zone.

Air and sea

Airlines and ferry operators should update you about any cancellations directly.

You can find out more info about arriving via the airport or ferry terminals on our getting here page.
